Whonix
/ osWhonix is a desktop operating system designed for advanced anonymity, utilizing a two-VM architecture to make IP leaks impossible. It runs the “Whonix-Gateway” (which handles all Tor connections) and the “Whonix-Workstation” (where you run your apps) in completely separate virtual machines. Even if malware manages to gain root privileges on your Workstation, it cannot discover your real IP address because the Workstation simply doesn’t know it—it only sees the internal network provided by the Gateway.
This “split-VM” design offers robust protection against DNS leaks and malware that attempts to phone home. Whonix comes pre-configured with the Tor Browser, privacy-enhanced configuration files, and tools like partial chaotic key generation to defend against keystroke biometric profiling. While commonly used inside Qubes OS, it can also be run on Windows, macOS, or Linux via VirtualBox, providing a secure, Tor-only sandbox for sensitive tasks.
